Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 15 Mar, Hishaam Salie (South Africa - Dry summer sub-tropical climate)
Good day I've recently gotten my green fingers and have created a beautiful garden with my wife ,its smells of herbs in the day and jasmine in the evening with a colorful variety of trees and plants, sadly to say we've been trying for a while now to germinate a chili tree from its pips of the fruit. My question which would be the correct method to follow and how do we maintain its up keep and which method of planting is the correct method in a pot at first or directly into the soil
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 17 Mar, Bee-Pie (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Growing peppers is easy. I like to sow seed in seed trays, but it really doesn't matter. Just ensure that if you plant them in situ (directly into the ground) that you offer them protection from nocturnal critters as well as birds. Cover seed to a depth of three times their size. Peppers, in particular, do not like to germinate in wet soil. Moist soil only. Peppers take approximately 7-8 days to germinate.
Potato 14 Mar, (Australia - temperate climate)
I have 1 long green cattle water trough with a plug for drainage. Have filled it with a mix of soul, compost and chicken manure. I will try and grow on row in that and see how we go. It is hot and humid here so will have to see how it goes. Also have a half small rainwater tank with a good mix of compost and soil and will also try to grow some in that. Fingers crossed.
Tomato 14 Mar, philip hope (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Bright yellow leaves at the tip of the plant what is the soil deficient in? I live just outside of Gympie
Tomato 28 Apr, Tania (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Hi Phillip, yellow leaves tend to mean you need more calcium in the soil.... try some chicken manure.
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 14 Mar, Hantie (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Can I still plant chillies in March?
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 29 Mar, Sanet (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Hi Hantie, yes, you can if you keep the seedlings inside the house or somewhere warm. Chillies don't like cold weather. And it may take longer for the seeds to germinate during colder seasons - if at all. I've planted chillies right through the year, keeping them in our scullery with layers of newspaper underneath the seedling trays to keep them warm, and they germinated beautifully. Good luck!

Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 14 Mar, Cal (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi, keen to start growing some naga or similar - I'm based in Sydney and am aware that summer is ending as I write this, will this delay the germination/growth/harvest or are they quite resilient to seasons? I intend on using a heat map in my apartment to begin with, before potting and moving outside onto a balcony. Let me know if this sounds like it'll work - all advice appreciated!

Garlic 17 Mar, Bee-Pie (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Nitrogen. Add well rotted cow manure as a side dressing if you've already planted your garlic. When cow manure isn't available to me, I use Comfrey or worm tea.

Jerusalem Artichokes (also Sunchoke) 23 May, JimboC (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi natcha nottle I grew Jerusalem Artichokes for the first time last season. They came up a treat with little to no extra care required! I'm in Newcastle NSW and grew them in a sandy soil but I gather they are quite hardy and tolerate a lot of different climates and soil types. I got my Jerusalem Artichokes from the Diggers Club They sent me three tubers which all came up when planted and produced a LOT more tubers which I am harvesting now. Hope that helps. JimboC

Salsify (also Vegetable oyster) 10 Mar, Christine Rivière-Anderson (Canada - Zone 4b Temperate Warm Summer climate)
I would love to plant black salsify in my area ( Muskoka, 225 kms north of Toronto) . I grew up in France where salsify is a common vegetable and I really miss it here. I realize that I live in a colder zone than is probably possible for growing salsify and that the harvesting is normally done in the winter but would it be possible to wait for Spring to harvest ? And if not, do I need to grow it in a greenhouse ? Thanks for your suggestions!!
Salsify (also Vegetable oyster) 12 May, Celeste Archer (Canada - Zone 7a Mild Temperate climate)
I'm from a warmer region - but I recalled something about hard freezes and salsify, so I checked the website where I purchased my seeds (RESTORATION seeds); here is some of the information from that site, where it talks about a hard freeze.... -- from their site --- The leaves of black salsify are spearhead shaped and have an excellent mild flavor improved by frost. They last past mild freezes and re-grow quickly after hard ones. They taste very much like lettuce. Come spring, they produce copius quantities of large, mild-flavored leaves long before lettuce can be planted. Late rin the summer when they bolt, your lettuce will be available. Also known as Scorzonera, Black Vegetable-oyster Plant, Serpent Root and Viper's Grass. Tags: Season: Spring Fall Winter, Seed:
Strawberry Plants 10 Mar, Pat Connolly (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
Most other sources indicate that the best time to plant strawberries in South Africa is March or April, yet you recommend planting in August or September. Which is correct??
Strawberry Plants 20 Apr, Chris (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
It will vary according to the climate zone.
Tomato 10 Mar, Dave McGinlay (Australia - temperate climate)
I have an amazing Roma Tomato plant that is now in it;s third flowering & has produced over 200 tomatoes over the past 18 months(I just trim off the dead foliage) Lately some of the fruit has a very small round hole in them & when cut open reveals a heap of tiny eggs. Could this be some kind of wasp.? I am picking them a bit earlier now as the culprit can;t seem to put a hole in them if they are slightly unripe. Regards Dave McGinlay
Tomato 15 Mar, Jacqueline Comber (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Sounds very much like fruit fly...we can't grow in Sumner because of these.
