Rhubarb 22 Apr, Steve (Australia - temperate climate)
Rhubarb loves lots and lots of cool manure - cow is great. You can't put too much of it around the plant.
Borage (also Burrage, Bugloss) 21 Apr, Raewyn McConnell (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Our Borrage plants, in a bed of light, well drained but nourishing soil, have grown wonderfully and are now in full flower (22.4.2016) They are large, but are showing signs of what appears to be collar rot. Could this be because they were mulched and it is an unseasonally damp summer, or because they have grown larger than usual and become too close together; shutting out sun to the roots? Need to know for the safety of future crops.
Onion 21 Apr, Karina (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Hi I've planted onion seeds directly into the garden bed and then mulched over the top. Should I have waited until the seedlings grew before mulching? I've heard that like carrots you are supposed to thin them out? What should I do? TIA
Onion 30 Apr, Paul (Australia - arid climate)
Mulching over seed will not allow them to germinate and then push through to the sun. Onion, lettuce and carrot all grow well together (The Three Sisters) and need to "see the sun" to germinate well. I plant the three mixed together thrown over the bed and then water in stirring the top 5mm of soil in the process and then keep moist with a misting rosehead. They will then come up thicker than hairs on a cats back and effectively do not need mulch until you have thinned out the baby carrots to allow bigger ones to grow. Lettuce you can pick and let come again while the onions slowly get bigger. Trim dead and yellowing onion leaves to encourage more growth.
Capsicum (also Bell peppers, Sweet peppers) 21 Apr, Jessica (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi I've been growing this capsicum plant for ages and the first season the fruit was big, it grew even bigger then it got way too big for the pot it was in so we carefully transplanted it to a bigger one. Since the massive growth spurt it hasn't put on any big fruit, the biggest was maybe slightly bigger then one of those little bouncy balls. It gets food and stuff but still nothing, i encourage new fruit by constantly harvesting it which usually just gets thrown away as they're far too small to cut up (the entire thing is just seeds inside). Please help I don't know what else to do and I miss the fresh capsicum lol

Strawberry Plants 18 Apr, Pam Elizabeth LLoyd (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
I have bought 3 healthy looking strawberry plants and each one of them seem to start off well , then the plant starts to looks sick and all the strawberries that grow are not bright red, brownish and just die off. The leaves also do not look healthy. I have planted them in a planter with lots of compost. What am I doing wrong??
Rhubarb 18 Apr, glenda deschamps (Australia - temperate climate)
We have had our rhubarb in for more than 1 year and the leaves and stalks are growing beautiful but are still green. When will they turn red?
Rhubarb 22 Apr, Tempest (Australia - temperate climate)
They won't. It sounds like you have a green-stalk variety of rhubarb. If the stalks aren't even partially red when they first sprout then it's not a red variety. I've got three different red rhubarb varieties and even the dullest colour one had stalks come up with a pinky tinge to it. Do you know what the variety you have is called? Also, whether it was grown from crown or seed? For example I've heard that the Victoria variety can be either red or green, and if it's grown from seed then it's far more likely to end up being green.
Rhubarb 02 Sep, longinthetooth (Australia - temperate climate)
The culinary web sites recommend the green varieties, better taste, but quite difficult to find.
Rhubarb 18 Apr, Julie (Australia - temperate climate)
We have a rhubarb that doesn't seem to ripen to red stalks it is in a large pot could this be the problem
Asparagus 17 Apr, willem pretorius (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Please could you tell me if asparagus will grow in the harrismith area with it's extremely cold winters. Thanks.
Asparagus 14 Sep, Ivan van der Merwe (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Hi Sir, firstly I live in Memel 98km East from Harry Smith and my asparagus does very well. I feel if you speak to the owner of the nursery next to the Spar he might be able to assist with plants. I have some 40 plants in my garden, all started from 4 plants. Enjoy your rewarding plants. They love the cold weather. And also seed well once they establish themselves. DO NOT BE IN A HURRY. Plant them away from the traffic even as an unusual garden separator. Do remember the bush can grow up to 1Meter high and some what wide. When it dies down leave it standing to almost the end of winter then cut them off and use for your compost. Enjoy the new venture. You are welcome to contact me.
Asparagus 09 Nov, Lauren (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
I have 3 Asparagus plants, one of which is growing exceptionally well. I can't seem to find any information as to what to do if I've missed harvesting the shoots. Do I cut down all the ferns to increase shooting of new spears on each plant until the yield is done? Or do I just keep looking out for new shoots to harvest. They were planted last year as a 2 year old plant (grown in a pot in a greenhouse). Any guidance and information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Asparagus 17 Oct, Eugene J Martens (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)

I know the teply is late but try a bit of potash to up the potassium and avoid nitrogen heavy fertilizers during the flowering season.

Garlic 16 Apr, Jen (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I would like to know which varieties of garlic are suitable to grow in Brisbane and where I could purchase them. Any advice would be really appreciated.
Garlic 02 May, Brooke (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Hi Jen, Elephant garlic will grow well. It is not as strong as the other smaller garlics, but you should find success. Be sure to mound up so you can ensure drainage and control water to them. Space 20cm apart in rich soil. Good luck
Garlic 01 May, Grace (Australia - tropical climate)
Hi Jen, I am from Brisbane and have just planted my garlic. This will be my 3rd year. I bought some organic garlic from the Lawnton Market and kept some from previous years to grow again. I plant it late April/early May and harvest around late Sept/early Oct. I grew the white garlic variety as shown in picutre shown above.
