Cucumber 24 Jan, Sarah Day (Australia - temperate climate): Hi David, i dont bother to trellis, i let them grow like pumpkins along the ground. yes this can leave a yellowing on the bottom, but they grow well and taste perfect, in fact im having trouble keeping up with them. I did this last year because i planted seeds in a large seed raising tray and let them go to far before transplanting and so i just upturned the tray and planted it undisturbed in the middle of a garden bed. We are growing on raised beds as our soil is stoney and clay and we are totally reliant on rainwater. We are in central Victoria and have hot harsh summers so i set up a shadecloth cover for the really hot days. 13mm spray irrigation and we have had no powdery mildew at all. Hope your cues are starting to grow. :)

Garlic 17 Jan, Becky (USA - Zone 9b climate): I live in Ponte Vedra (about 15 miles south of Jacksonville Beach). I grew a little bit of garlic last year in our raised garden bed. It didn't seem to have a lot of flavor. I see that you don't recommend garlic for zone 9B. Why is that?

Garlic 05 Apr, Jack Benimble (USA - Zone 9b climate): It gets so hot in 9b you have to have a shaded area that receives sunlight. 8 hours in the blazing Florida sun cooks the soil and roots. The hot temperatures that can begin as early as March-April heat up the soil and accelerates growth too quickly which results in smaller bulbs

Zucchini (also Courgette/Marrow, Summer squash) 16 Jan, Pete (Australia - temperate climate): It is usually a sign of Low Calcium in the soil. you can get some products that contain calcium but they are mixed element sprays etc. you run the risk of putting to much of something else in, that is not required. Best tip I have been given is to place all your eggshell in water for 2 or 3 weeks, then water the base of the plants with this. and next time your preparing your soil, bury all your used (crushed) eggshell into the soil of the garden bed. I just started to use Eggshell water a month ago and I have already picked the new growth fruit that has no sign of the rot, some still do but instead of all of them rotting I get to eat 7 out of 10 now. Rhubarb 22 Apr, Tempest (Australia - temperate climate): I got taught to use well rotted chook manure. Not sure about others - as long as it's high in nitrogen, I reckon you'll be fine!
