Rhubarb 26 Jan, Amanda (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
The best way of cooking rhubarb is to string it and then cut it into chunks, place it on a baking tray, sprinkle with sugar and bake bout 20min at 180. Lovely done with ginger as well!

Stop watering them daily. Once a week is ok, every 2-3 days in summer.
Beans - climbing (also Pole beans, Runner beans, Scarlet Runners) 25 Jan, Vanessa (Australia - tropical climate)
I am growing the English variety of green runner beans, apparently the easiest to grow.........but something is eating them, they flower beautifully, little beans appear and then I look the next day and there is only a little green stem where they were. Perhaps I am watering them too much? Are they lacking in nutrients? Can I net them all day? They originally had the tiny black fly but sprayed them and they went. Grasshoppers are vicious here but I never see them. Please, any advice would be a great help to me. Thanks
Beans - climbing (also Pole beans, Runner beans, Scarlet Runners) 25 Oct, Ted (Australia - temperate climate)
Like Tomatoes they may need a feed, try Tomato fertiliser to help the flowers setI find it helps. Also shade from afternoon Sun.
Beans - climbing (also Pole beans, Runner beans, Scarlet Runners) 06 Feb, Bert (Australia - temperate climate)
Grew a great crop of dwarf beans and then planted the same bean as you. Nothing!!! Beautiful big bushes Jack would have been proud of. Thinking of pulling them out as the flowers drop, or are bitten off. Then this morning for some reason I see lots of little beans growing. No tip here for you, but perhaps food? for thought.
Zucchini (also Courgette/Marrow, Summer squash) 23 Jan, Valerie (Australia - temperate climate)
Does anyone know if black jack zucchini is a hybrid? Can I harvest seeds for next years crop? Thank you in advance.
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 23 Jan, Olaf (Australia - temperate climate)
Cape Gooseberry (Melbourne) I found a friend had a plant, from which I took two small cuttings. I just popped them in the ground and kept them moist. This was in March15. I needed to protect the young plants from marauding birds though. The cuttings were nipped off at ground level by a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo. Not a problem though, I just replanted the remaining cutting out of cocky's reach. Now it is 3 feet tall has flowers on it and I am looking forward with much anticipation to enjoying the wonderful little fruit parcels. I have grown them before, but sadly found you need to propagate a new plant about every 2/3 years, as they are not long lived. This time I am not going to be deprived of this wonderful little fruit!
Salsify (also Vegetable oyster) 23 Jan, Elisa Turner (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I remember eating black salsify (Schwarz- Wurzel in Germany.) They tasted very much like Asparagus. Very nice! Why can I not buy this vegetable in Australian vegetable shops? I may try and grow black salsify in my garden in subtropical region of Australia. Should I best wait for winter's colder weather?
Salsify (also Vegetable oyster) 25 Jul, Asn (Australia - temperate climate)
Salsify sold in certain vegetables and fruit shops, it costs as much as $90.00 a kilo, The best way get the seeds is to buy a piece of Salsify cut the bottom part off and cook it enjoy yourself, the top part, you can plant it in the garden, wait for it to grow to flowers, harvest the seeds when the flowers dry. The best time to grow is in late August early September.

Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 28 Jan, Graeme (Australia - arid climate)
Hi Rachel. I live in Kalgoorlie WA and found Cape Gooseberry seedlings at the local Bunnings store ($4.95) when I was picking up finger limes that I had ordered. I am sure that they or most of the larger nurseries can get them in for you. As a kid we had several plants always growing as mum loved making jam with them. I am looking forward to enjoying them again. Good luck

Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 18 Jan, Doug (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I planted about 10 chili plants of different varieties in October. Only 1 variety has produced chilies. The other bushes are big and green and have been full of flowers for about a month, but no chilies. They are all in the same section of the garden. Do you have any thoughts on how I can get them to produce? Thanks.
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 22 Jan, Jono (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Chillis love nutrients! Give them a dose of liquid fertilizer ( I use Go-Go Juice or Charlie Carp) both available from Bunnings/Masters. Once they do fruit....the more you pick, the more chillis will fruit! If you have flowers you will get chillis....just give them time and lots of water in the hot season.
