When to plant for december harvest? Distance between plants?
Garlic 10 Aug, Pam (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
I buy my seeds online from Living Seeds which supply organic seeds and products. I have had great success with their seeds. I recently found another site called Organic Seeds, but have not as yet bought from them. Both sites have a large variety of all vegetables, Cape Gooseberry and other seeds. Both sites offer assistance from growing, to product use etc.

Is facing West with full Summer sun good growing condition for cape gooseberry? Or can you suggest another not too high fruit bush ? Not higher than one metre as it would then block sun from enclosure garden where herbs etc are grown at our Community Garden. Thank you in advance Helen.
Pumpkin 09 Aug, (Australia - temperate climate)
the first lot of female flowers need to be pollinated.. then the fruit grows in the next flower lot
Tomato 08 Aug, anna (Australia - temperate climate)
I brought some tomatoes inside last year and my grandson picked some that were not as red as the rest. I left the not so red ones on the kitchen bench and they became redder over a period of days. I love homegrown tomatoes - they are a joy to cook with - they seem to go redder and are tastier than shop bought tomates
Rhubarb 08 Aug, anna (Australia - temperate climate)
I keep the liquid to a minimum when cooking rhuburb (chopped into 2 inch long lengths)and stay in the kitchen so i can check it regularly. Nothing worse than overcooked mushy rhubarb. For those watching weight I have cooked it in low calorie lemonade. Once cooked then remove from hotplate and dissolve a small amount of gelatine into liquid. Not enough for it to set the liquid. But just enough for the remaining pink liquid to look the consistency of a syrup
Watermelon 08 Aug, Peter du Preez (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
The soil here is extremely sandy so we make compost and loosen the soil (basically make a hole for seedlings and enrich it with 300ml of compost). I've never planted watermelons and would like to (cabbage and radish work wonderfully here). What irrigation is better - overhead or drip? How much water per day/week? (we plant without wastage). Is it okay if I use mulch - we do it for everything else to preserve the soil. It gets to about 45C in summer... is that okay?
Tomato 08 Aug, Lola (Canada - Zone 3a Temperate Short Summer climate)

WHICH IS THE BEST GARLIC VARIETY THAT CAN BE GROWING IN BOTSWANA ?
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 02 Aug, Terry (Australia - temperate climate)
In relation to the Cape Gooseberry be sure they are golden with no green when picked for eating. I have read the plant, and green fruit, is poisonous to animals including humans. Even fowl will steer clear of it. I did research when I noticed the sheep would not eat it. It makes a sumptuous jam and are yummy coated in chocolate.

Beetroot (also Beets) 30 Jul, Leo (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Planted Beetroot about 3 months ago Dig down no sign of any Bulbs What would be the cause Planted about 12 Seedlings all the same ?? Type Bulls blood Fertilized about 2 weeks before Planting with all round veg Fertilizer
Beetroot (also Beets) 17 Aug, Chris (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Leo, I have minimal bulb growth with Bullls blood in Brisbane. Try any of the Detroit beets next time (they have green tops), and keep up the liquid fertiliser fortnightly.
Beetroot (also Beets) 03 Aug, Barb (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi Leo, You might trying feeding them a bit more with a fish emulsion or similar type of organic liquid fertiliser. It's possible the cold winter has slowed them up, and if they're not getting enough nutrition/water that would add to their woes. Take heart, I sometimes find exactly the same thing happens with mine. I would also plant some more seedings/seeds now - with spring coming on you should get a bit more action from the next planting. Good luck!
Beetroot (also Beets) 12 Aug, gary (Australia - temperate climate)
I have to disagree, fish emulsion will give them a boost and appear correct. It's Nitrogen, very good for leaf growth.but root growth luv potassium and phos. By adding Nitrogen it increases leaf growth. A root vegetable wants P(phos) then K (potassium).NPK is rated on all fertiliser. PS you can eat beetroot leaves.Gaz
