Carrot 16 Feb, Peter (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Best ph reading of soil for growing carrots please. Having trouble getting carrots to come up? Keep the top of the soil moist (NOT WET!!) until they raise their heads.
Yacon (also Sunroot) 16 Feb, Steve warner (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I received information that the properties from Sunroot taken orally are a rejuvenation to life healing or giving relief to many ailments including arthritis, diabetes, rheumatics, cholesterol etc. Seems too good to be true. Can you support their claim? I would like to grow it, can you help me?
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 16 Feb, Mira (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Thanku all-very helpful comments. It looks like the diagram: tiny chillies. What if I plant it into the ground with a shade-cloth roof to protect from frost?
Rhubarb 15 Feb, Lee Patterson (Australia - temperate climate)
I live in Taree, New South Wales. It is quite hot during Summer and reasonably cold in Winter. When would be the best time for me to plant Rhubarb. Thanking you.
Rhubarb 22 Apr, Tempest (Australia - temperate climate)
Rhubarb crowns are usually only available during winter - which more or less answers the question! I'm in Melbourne and last year was our coldest winter on record - I planted several newly purchased rhubarb crowns and they all did fine.
Rhubarb 06 Mar, Morveen (Australia - temperate climate)
You can put the crown of rhubarb in anytime, make sure it's in the shade. I am in the Taree district and mine grows well. Mine loves dynamic lifter, and try not to pick too much off the first year.
Celery 15 Feb, wayne (USA - Zone 8a climate)
depending on the authors knowledge of living for a year in each of the zones... weather has changing attitudes in each. I hope the 3200 elevation in mid california does fine. we are a vegetable growing couple, ready for new adventures. wish us luck
Ginger 15 Feb, The Sunlander (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I live in Brisbane and have grown gingers, both edible and non-edible types, for many years. They are very hardy plants and succeed very well when left alone. I see on various gardening web sites conflicting information re the cultivation - one site for instance says to plant in shade, never in full sun. My edible ginger grows happily in full sun!! I water mine because the soil dries out but a friend has his in pots and they grow just as well. So, give it a go. Buy good looking ginger in the supermarket, break the rhizome into several parts each with at least one bud on.
Horseradish 15 Feb, Peter (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
I'm from Centurion and had some horseradish plants. They died towards the end of 2015 in the drought but I managed to save a plant that is now doing well again. Make a note and contact me in August 2016 and I will give away some roots to start with in the new growing season. First-come-first-served. e-mail: [email protected]

Capsicum (also Bell peppers, Sweet peppers) 15 Feb, Ruby (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi, was just wondering if anyone could offer me some advice on my capsicums. My plant is healthy and producing plenty of fruit but just as fruit starts to turn red the fruit starts getting eaten by something causing it to rot making the fruit inedible. Any tips?
Capsicum (also Bell peppers, Sweet peppers) 14 Apr, Michelle (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi , mine had same problem I opened up and mine had Clog Moths a clear whitish fleshy Grub looking thing so I had to spray , but take the crop off start again wait till next lot spray but my leafs went limp but still producing good capsicums I'm in WA we had a very hot Sumer too hope that helps
Capsicum (also Bell peppers, Sweet peppers) 06 Mar, Alan (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi Ruby, This late in the season eat the remaining capsicums on your plants green, leave the plants in the ground until next season & you will find they set fruit early. With a stronger root system & larger plant you will reap a bumper crop around early January. Sorry about the timing I'm new to the site.
Rockmelon (also Canteloupe) 15 Feb, Ruby (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi, I've planted rockmelon for first time. Plant was healthy and produced lots of flowers and fruit, but fruit is either splitting and being eaten by bugs (not sure which is happening first whether bugs are causing the splits or whether they're just taking advantage) before we get a chance to get to it. Plant itself looking very forlorn now. Doesn't look like powdery mildew but leaves are all dying back. What's eating my fruit?
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 15 Feb, Sandra Roberts (Australia - temperate climate)
I live in Parramatta area and wonder what zone I'm in !! Just seen comment from someone who has Gippsland as temperate ?? Love this site.

Carrot 17 Mar, Bee-Pie (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Also, do not plant them in the same bed.
Carrot 17 Mar, Bee-Pie (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Beetroots & carrots require very little nitrogen. Too much and you'll have big leaves at the expense of root development. Phosphate and potassium encourages more root development.
Zucchini (also Courgette/Marrow, Summer squash) 14 Feb, Dianne (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Best time in Geraldton Wa to grow Zucchinis
Beetroot (also Beets) 14 Feb, jackie.fick (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
could I plant beetroot in same land that garlic had fusarium rot
Beetroot (also Beets) 17 Mar, Bee-Pie (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
I would not advise it. You're better off sterilizing the soil as many plants are susceptible to fusarium root rot.

Beetroot (also Beets) 12 Feb, Adriana (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi, I'm from Whyalla, South Australia, when is the best time for me to plant beetroot? Thank you, much appreciated.
Beetroot (also Beets) 11 Mar, Sally Su (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Hi Adriana, You can plant beetroot almost all year round in a temperate climate except for 2 months which are May & June. So you have the rest of March and April to have a go, then you will have to wait until July. Happy sowing, Sally Su.
Sunflower 10 Feb, Beverley Hall (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
