Hi, I bought my Yacon from www.daleysfruit.com.au, they send you the plants by post. Very reliable and I trust them as I have bought from them cheery trees, avocado trees etc. I just got my plant from them last week. good luck, cheers Linette
Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 27 Sep, peter (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Please help. When do I plant maize in the area south of Johannesburg? I'm asking because all my neighbours say we must plant in December. Thnx Peter
Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 01 Oct, May (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
I think you can plant before December during spring already, as soon as the danger of frost has passed. Also, if you are planting more than one variety, it is best to do so a few weeks apart so they don't mature at the same time, because they cross-polinate between species.
Sweet corn (also corn,maize) 17 Mar, A (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
I only have a small home garden. I generally start planting my first batch around more d Sept and the every 6 to 8 weeks thereafter. If my first batch was planted in September , my sweet or green corn is harvested in Early Jan or Feb. I plant pumpkins in between the rows and when the corn is about shin high I interspace with climbing green been. The pumpkin protects the corn roots and the beans provide nitrogen.
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 26 Sep, claire labelle (Canada - Zone 4b Temperate Warm Summer climate)
where can i get seeds to grow in Canada
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 04 Jul, Bea (Canada - Zone 4b Temperate Warm Summer climate)
I just bought a packet of the fruit and then squished the seeds of one berry onto paper towel, then folded it up and stored it. This was in winter. Around April I sowed the seed and it all came up and grew very well. I now have plants about a foot tall. Very healthy and easy to grow. I am treating it just as I would a tomato plant and it's growing wonderfully.

Tomato 25 Sep, Karl (South Africa - Humid sub-tropical climate)
Best varieties for Mozambique will be HTX 14, HTX 14 Turbo and a Brazilian variety Kilele available from Agrifocus Moz. (All determinate). Kilele gave me incredible results of 150 t/ha. They are processing type and need some staking. Moz market wants processing tomato and not round type. Disease control is your main problem due to very high humidity levels. Hope this helps?
Tomato 09 Dec, Derek Bennett (South Africa - Humid sub-tropical climate)

Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 25 Sep, Kay (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I'm in Tassie and have cape gooseberries both in my greenhouse and the garden. Our possums love them but they have to beat our grandchildren to them. I encouage the kids because they are so full of vitamins and help keep the colds away. They pop up in the blue metal in our driveway all the time as well although I do find they are difficult to move successfully. I'm yet to make jam - too many possums/grandchildren.
Brussels sprouts 25 Sep, Kay (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I'm in northern Tasmania and planted my Brussel sprouts in May as well. The whole lot went to seed after producing a few very loose sprouts. I though a pout using the leaves in soups etc as I hate waste, but I read that they are quite bitter so I guess the lot go into compost. Any comments welcome
Brussels sprouts 17 Oct, Jul (Australia - temperate climate)
If you still have some going to seed, let them, and then collect the ripe seed for sowing later.
Brussels sprouts 26 Sep, Candice (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I had the same experience, Kay, but I did harvest the plant on the weekend and made a delicious soup with the leaves. I put the hard stems in the compost. The base stock for the recipe was one diced onion and six cloves of garlic chopped and softened in olive oil, 2 litres of chicken stock, 1 cup of white wine, 1 cup of water, salt and white pepper. Add the leaves and 250g of mushrooms and simmer away for an hour or so then blitz with a hand blender. I also added half a cup of cream at the end. It was really delicious and the left overs went into the freezer!
Horseradish 25 Sep, Carolyn Lewis (Australia - temperate climate)
Been buying a paste from spud shed, it was made in Europe. It has help control my allergies, chest mucus and sinus. Tablets from the chemist does not work as good. Living in Perth. Tried all nurseries can't get it. Can you help me. I grow my own turmeric and make it in a paste with a pinch of black pepper. This also works better than tablets for inflamation arthritis..

Sweet Potato (also Kumara) 24 Sep, Kay (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I have planted slips that I grew about 2-3 months ago, The slips are in soil, in large plastic tubes with holes in the bottom & sides to drain as much water I can. We have had soooo much rain, & I checked the top & bottom soil. The top soil is dry, but the bottom soil is very wet. Should I leave them to do what it automatically do itself to grow, or remove the soil & slips & start again? I dug to bottom of the vines to see how they have been growing. The slips have lots of roots.
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 24 Sep, Fiona Waddell (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi I ve just discovered we have a cape gooseberry plant growing behind our shed... it has randomly appeared and is almost a metre high. None of the fruit have grown any bigger than a $2 coin and havent ripened. It is currently in the ground but I was wandering if I should move it? To full sun or whether i should collect the dropped fruit for seeds?

Try Lifestyle Garden Centre off Byers Naude Drive in Randburg. They sometimes have more usual veggies and fruits as well as herbs. You should be able to Google them and get their contact details. Good luck :)
