(Best months for planting Radish in New Zealand - cool/mountain regions)

  • Easy to grow.
  • Harvest in 40-50 days
  • Sow in garden. Sow seed at a depth approximately three times the diameter of the seed.
  • Best planted at soil temperatures between 8°C and 30°C.
  • Space plants: 3-5cm

Small, spicy tasting root vegetable usually round but some longer varieties . Available in a range of colours between red and white.

Very easy to grow. Good for a child's first garden as seedlings appear in two or three days. Sow between other vegetables as they will mark the rows until the slower germinating plants appear.

Culinary hints - cooking and eating Radish

Wash well and remove leaves and roots.
Use raw in salads or on their own with bread and butter.

All I get is plenty of lush greenery and very small Red bits. This is in Central Otago.

George, maybe the soil is overfertilised? Too much nitrogen could result in lots of leaf growth.

we had the same problem with the round red radishes but the french type longer red/white ones were fantastic- perhaps try a different variety?

The leaves on curling up, could this be from overwatering? In Auckland.

i have planted raddish in a tray, they are growing well and the saplings are 5 cms.how do I transplant them and when

Transplanting any root veg is a bad idea, you want to sow directly into the garden so try to get them out of your seed trays ASAP.

I planted a packet called cocktail (i think) its a mix of all kinds of radish, they are so cool, I have white round ones, red round ones, red long ones, and purple ones. Got the packet from bunnings. Was just checking on here, as I didn't know you could get white ones. Thanks Gardengrow. Love your site. christchurch

I am growing the small round raddish Yates "Salad Crunch" The problem with them in that very few of the roots are fattening into raddishes, most are staying thin and stringy. They are watered regularly and the soil is not over fertilized with nitrogen. Is it possibly too hot and the plants are concentrating on leaf and seed development in which case should I avoid sowing Dec -Jan in future ?
