(Best months for planting Oregano in New Zealand - cool/mountain regions)

  • Harvest when plant reaches the flowering stage
  • Sow in garden, or start in seed trays. Sow seed at a depth approximately three times the diameter of the seed.
  • Best planted at soil temperatures between 18°C and 25°C.
  • Space plants: 15cm

Perennial growing to around 45 cm (17") high. Cut the stems back to the ground to encourage new growth.

There are two main varieties.

"Greek Oregano" is the type normally associated with Oregano flavor.

"Common Oregano" or Marjoram has a less pungent, sweeter taste and is more commonly grown.

For best flavour harvest in the morning just after the dew has lifted.

Easily propagated from root division. It can be hard to germinate seed. Can be grown from cuttings.

Culinary hints - cooking and eating Oregano

Used to flavour tomato dishes, soups, sauces and Greek dishes like moussaka

I am planting snow pea seedlings for the first time. The tray tag says they need support. What kind of support should I erect? Our vege garden has a perimeter fence down 1 side. Should I use this with some trellis?

I live in a frosty area. Can I grow snow peas?

Kate, peas of most varieties need support. They produce small tendrils which will cling to twiggy supports or netting. If you use trellis, you might need to tie up the stems. Max, snow peas will grow if you can protect them from the worst of the frosts with frostcloth or similar.
