Just buy NZ Garlic from the fruit shop (which will still be open during quarantine), break it apart and plant the largest cloves and eat the little ones.

Is it this straight forward for elephant garlic too? I’ve saved some bulbs from summer, hoping to plant these in big pots as the soil here is terrible.

Probably yes.

I get my elephant garlic cloves started in egg trays, with a little water in the bottom . too get them to start rooting before i plant them. Its Way quicker then the fridge method. Also nothing worse then planting a garlic clove that wont root. This method works for me ,so i will continue to do it :)
