Choko/Chayote (also Chayote squash, christophene, chouchou, mirliton) 29 Apr, Ren (Australia - temperate climate): I have just found this choko vine growing up the back of my shed t much amazement as nothing was planted there the summer weather has gone and there are a few of them on there a decent looking size how do i take them off just pluck like a lemon and should i cut it back now or let it run wild as i quite like the vines very intersting and it seems t have a mind of its own...

Ginger 29 Apr, alan (Australia - temperate climate): after a couple of weeks a piece of ginger i bought from a green grocer has just sprouted. i have it in a small pot inside a homemade 'hot box' i made. the hot box is about 1 m cube with a 25w light bulb inside to keep it warm [approx 25 deg c]. i initially made the box to keep my ginger beer plant 'alive' to make ginger beer throughout winter - my family loves the stuff!

Rhubarb 29 Apr, (Australia - sub-tropical climate): I grow rhubarb and I have plenty of stalks but they are short, no more than 30cm, and only 1cm thick. I prepared the soil well with plenty of compost and feed regularly with dynamic lifter, Epsom salts, Seasol and cow manure pats around each plant. I water deeply twice a week. It tastes great but I would love to know how to get larger stalks. Any ideas would be gratefully received Thanks

Rhubarb 30 Apr, ray (United Kingdom - cool/temperate climate): Try just manuring the plants when the leaves have dies down to protect the crown over the winter, you don't really need to add Epsom salts as its probably putting to much iron for the plant to cope with and only add it if the leave start to go yellowish in the spring.

Mizuna (also Japanese Greens, Mitzuna, Mibuna) 28 Apr, Dave (Australia - cool/mountain climate): I bought a mix of asian sprouting seeds from bunnings. Didnt have much luck with one the packs sprouting and when I pulled an old plant out of a box I saw the seeds and thought I'd drop them into the soil. 4 days later there all coming up.

Kohlrabi 29 Apr, Chris (Australia - cool/mountain climate): You can harvest it when the bulb is big enough to eat. Anything from golf-ball sized up. Smaller is crisper. Large ones get a bit tough and stringy. The leaves are edible too but a bit strongly flavoured.

Tomato 27 Apr, Trish - (Australia - sub-tropical climate): I have never grown Roma acid tomatoes before. At first I watched the plants growing in leaps and bounds day by day - then they seemed to come to a standstill. I am in Cairns. But this morning went out to look them over and noticed that one plant has 3 tomatoes on it but the plant itself does not look happy. Trish

Snow Peas (also Sugar Peas, Mangetout, Chinese Peas) 27 Apr, Dee (Australia - temperate climate): Hi Ziggy Yes, they're very easy to grow although you need to make sure they have enough ventilation as they can easily get white powdery mildew (I think that's what it's called). They come up pretty quickly too which I always find exciting. I soak my seeds in warm water overnight before I plant them. Happy growing!

Rhubarb 26 Apr, Paul Costin (Australia - temperate climate): I have several plants in an strip area between the west side of the house and the fence. In summer the sun shines from 11am to 3 pm, in winter little sun. On a windy day it area is draughty and cold and hot in summer. My questioned is Production and growth is poor even tho. The plants are fertilised and mulched as required. Should the plants be lifted up in the same area, I feel they could be a little low. 2 plants I have replanted into pots In a north facing area and are going well another plant is not. If you have any advice it would be appreciated. Thanks Paul

Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 25 Apr, Ruth J (Australia - temperate climate): Hi, awesome website, thanks! I'm trying to plant more perennial vegetables. I didn't know much about Cape Gooseberries but planted them for the first time from seed last Spring. They grew very well, no pests and only a few yellow leaves. Problem was, even though I waited until the berries fell to harvest them, about 90% of them were large enough but green and stayed that way, for weeks. Conditions were good, I had watered less - every second day as the temperatures cooled. Thanks.

Horseradish 22 Apr, Barbara (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate): I kept the rootpieces in water through winter and spring in a cold glasshouse and they were rooting and making leaves. In Nov. or Dec. I planted them in a deep bucket and they are growing beautifully. I'll harvest after the first frost, if anybody wants pieces, pls contact me [email protected].
