Salsify (also Vegetable oyster) 10 Mar, Christine Rivière-Anderson (Canada - Zone 4b Temperate Warm Summer climate)
I would love to plant black salsify in my area ( Muskoka, 225 kms north of Toronto) . I grew up in France where salsify is a common vegetable and I really miss it here. I realize that I live in a colder zone than is probably possible for growing salsify and that the harvesting is normally done in the winter but would it be possible to wait for Spring to harvest ? And if not, do I need to grow it in a greenhouse ? Thanks for your suggestions!!
Salsify (also Vegetable oyster) 12 May, Celeste Archer (Canada - Zone 7a Mild Temperate climate)
I'm from a warmer region - but I recalled something about hard freezes and salsify, so I checked the website where I purchased my seeds (RESTORATION seeds); here is some of the information from that site, where it talks about a hard freeze.... -- from their site --- The leaves of black salsify are spearhead shaped and have an excellent mild flavor improved by frost. They last past mild freezes and re-grow quickly after hard ones. They taste very much like lettuce. Come spring, they produce copius quantities of large, mild-flavored leaves long before lettuce can be planted. Late rin the summer when they bolt, your lettuce will be available. Also known as Scorzonera, Black Vegetable-oyster Plant, Serpent Root and Viper's Grass. Tags: Season: Spring Fall Winter, Seed:
Strawberry Plants 10 Mar, Pat Connolly (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
Most other sources indicate that the best time to plant strawberries in South Africa is March or April, yet you recommend planting in August or September. Which is correct??
Strawberry Plants 20 Apr, Chris (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
It will vary according to the climate zone.
Tomato 10 Mar, Dave McGinlay (Australia - temperate climate)
I have an amazing Roma Tomato plant that is now in it;s third flowering & has produced over 200 tomatoes over the past 18 months(I just trim off the dead foliage) Lately some of the fruit has a very small round hole in them & when cut open reveals a heap of tiny eggs. Could this be some kind of wasp.? I am picking them a bit earlier now as the culprit can;t seem to put a hole in them if they are slightly unripe. Regards Dave McGinlay
Tomato 15 Mar, Jacqueline Comber (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Sounds very much like fruit fly...we can't grow in Sumner because of these.

Beetroot (also Beets) 09 Mar, Mickey (Australia - temperate climate)
Beetroot seeds have been grown in poly boxes in shade cloth house. Germination 3 weeks on. 3-4 small leaves. Are they supposed to have such a long stalk approximately 20cm below leaf. Is this normal
Beetroot (also Beets) 16 Mar, Dennis (Australia - temperate climate)
I am having the trouble, my beetroot seedlings are growing on long long stalks, perhaps someone has an answer, they are under 50 per cent shade.. Great site Gardenate thanks.
Beetroot (also Beets) 28 Mar, sooze (Australia - temperate climate)
Too much shade causes legginess. I would start again and give much more light.

Cucumber 07 Mar, Mute (Australia - temperate climate)
Can I germinate and plant cucumber seeds in Sydney during March as weather is still warm? Will I get cucs? Just ripped my two vines as they stopped producing and wondering whether I can get another two in, grown from seed.

Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 06 Mar, Arend Treurnicht (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
Dear Ruth Morgan, bought a biggish plant from a local nursery. All went well until some bugs invaded, grazed the leaves and even started laying eggs on the underside in the curled-up leaves. Since propagated many small from the seeds, as well as seeds from ones I bought in the local shop, washed over a tea-sieve, dried on a kitchen roll and then into a Zip-lock folded into the damp kitchen-roll, damp and leave in peace for a fortnight. Very promising and keeping eyes on the old mother-plant as well as all the new seedlings. Very promising but this year the heat is merciless. First drops are falling and we hope they will thrive.
Amaranth (also Love-lies-bleeding) 06 Mar, jibsoz (Australia - temperate climate)
I heard Amaranth is good to grow as a sacrificial plant. Plant amongst veggies so the bugs eat them not your veggies
Amaranth (also Love-lies-bleeding) 20 Mar, Sue (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I have a beautiful red and green large leaf variety in my veg garden but it does self seed readily so be careful
Cucumber 06 Mar, roxanne chappell (Australia - temperate climate)
I seem to have have the some problem as others. I have got plenty of apple cucumbers grown but the leaves seem to be dieing. A closer inspection of the leaves there are little black bugs but they dont seem to live long then die on the leaves and it looks like dirt has been thrown over the leaves
